The LIFE NANOHEALTH project aims to reduce occuptional exposure to process generated nanoparticles (PGNPs) from critical permanently releasing industrial processes by optimizing the performance of Risk Management Measures (RMMs) in indoor exposure scenarios.

The Ceramic Industry Research Association (ITC-AICE) is a Private non-profit Research Institute recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness as  Technology  Centre  by  Royal  Decree 2093/2008. ITC-AICE is committed to providing solid support for ceramic sector in the defence and enhancement of their strategic positioning in the current global context, principally through innovation- enabling research and development actions, but also through whatever activities might serve to foster the competitiveness and growth of the sector, always based on sustainability criteria and commitment to societal well-being.

The competence attained through ITC-AICE´s wide-ranging research activity enables to extend its field of action to other types of processes and materials. Particularly ITC-AICE works in the field of ceramic processing, water management, energy efficiency, and industry´s environmental impact minimization (innovative waste recovery solutions, wastewater treatment and emissions reduction), as well as in the functionalization of ceramic surfaces and in the achievement of new technical performance and aesthetic features of products related to the habitat hyper-sector and other industries, such as high-tech tools advanced ceramics, automotive or petrochemical sectors. Its activities include products and processes improvement, residues and greenhouse pollutants reduction, control systems development, energy saving plans, etc

From the outset, ITC-AICE has undertaken several R&D activities in the ceramic and related industries, through projects funded by public bodies and by ceramic sector companies.

ITC-AICE has participated in several projects related with the LIFE NANOHEALTH topic as; NanoIMPULSA (IMDEEA/2017/87); ProSAFE  (IMDEEA/2018/78);  PGNano  (IMDEEA/2019/61)  with  UNIMAT  PREVENCION cooperation; CERASAFE (PCIN-2015-173-C02-02) with CSIC, TMCOMAS and VICTORIA´s group cooperation; and PREDEXPIN (GLC2015-66777-C2-2-R) with CSIC cooperation.

 

    Agencia estatal consejo superior de investigaciones científicas

The Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (IDAEA-CSIC, www.idaea.csic.es) is Spain´s National Research Council. It is Spain´s largest public research institution and ranks third among Europe´s largest research organisations. Attached to the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the General Secretariat for Scientific Policy Coordination, the CSIC plays a key role in scientific and technological policy in Spain and worldwide. Its main missions are to (1) foster multidisciplinary scientific and technological research, (2) transfer knowledge to industry and society, (3) educate and train scientific and technical staff, and (4) create Technology Based Companies (spin-offs). The CSIC has more than 10000 employees, including nearly 4000 staff researchers.  Currently  it  has  120 institutes spread across the country.

Within CSIC, the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research is specialized in environmental assessment, on indoor and ambient air quality and human exposure to air pollution. The IDAEA-CSIC team is specialized in air quality assessment and monitoring, using state of the art air pollutant instrumentation combined with innovative monitoring strategies focusing on novel pollutants.  The  team  has  strong expertise in occupational health impact assessment, with a focus on the identification of major sources impacting indoor air and occupational health, which in turn supports the implementation of mitigation strategies. Key EU and national projects coordinated by IDAEA-CSIC are "Safe production and Use of Nanomaterials in the Ceramic Industry" (CERASAFE), EU-ERANET SIINN, "Prediction  of  emissions  and exposure to micro- and nanoparticles in industrial  environments"  (PREDEXPIN),  Spanish  Ministry  of Economy and Competitiveness, and "Particle emissions in industrial harbour areas: release, fate and management" (IDEALPORT), Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

 

Cerámica Saloni, S.A.

CERAMICA SALONI, S.A. (SALONI) is a manufacturer Spanish Large Company of ceramic tiles since 1971, with more than 49 years of experience providing constructive solutions to the five continents (in over 100 countries), and member of the VICTORIA CERAMIC SPAIN group, composed by KERABEN among others. It has more than 270,000 m2 of sustainable facilities equipped with state-of-the art technology. R&D&I are essential factors at SALONI, where innovation is present in all SALONI´s scopes of work and the company constantly invests in R&D&I (including 4 Funded R&D projects at national level), obtaining the most advanced and efficient manufacturing methods. SALONI holds the international certification ISO 14001 which establishes the requirements to implement, develop and maintain a management system to control the environmental impact of its production processes. Moreover, it has had Integrated Environmental Authorisation (AAI) since 2005, which aims to prevent, reduce and control air, water and land pollution. SALONI is an Authorised Non-Hazardous Waste Management Company (No.015/AAI/CV) and is a company with zero liquid discharge of industrial wastewater, recycling any ceramic tiles that are removed from the production  process  before  the  firing  phase.  SALONI  is  incorporated  into  ECOEMBALAJES  ESPAÑA  S.A. (ECOEMBES) and is involved in PEP: Business Plan for the Prevention of Packaging and Packaging Waste. SALONI has certified its compliance with the standard UNE-EN-ISO 14021 for the recycled content in its internally manufactured products. Moreover, the company has obtained the EPD ecolabel (certified environmental declaration in accordance with UNE-EN-ISO 14025) for its range of ceramic products in groups BIa, BIIa and BIII. SALONI´s EPDs are registered under the management of the International EPD System Programme-Environdec. SALONI owns the environmental declaration FDES (Fiche de Déclaration Environnementale et Sanitaire) regulated by the AFNOR NF EN 15804+A1 standard.

 

Talleres Mecánicos Comas, S.L.U.

TMCOMAS is a Spanish SME stablished in 1952 whose core business activities include the manufacturing, repair, and surface modification of components mainly for oil & gas and nuclear industry. Particularly, key businesses are those related to all types of thermal spraying, laser cladding, babbitt bearings, special welding, precision machining and rotating machinery repair, which includes pumps,  gear  boxes, compressors, turbine rotors, compressor rotors and other kind of special equipment. TMCOMAS expertise focuses on surface coatings design and engineering for surface mechanical properties improvement and corrosion protection, and works with a large number of metals, alloys, carbides and oxides. Regarding surface engineering, TMCOMAS is pioneering specialist in thermal spraying of high-tech coatings by a wide variety of methods, mainly Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS), High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF), Arc Spray or Combustion Wire Spraying. Also, TMCOMAS offers life improvement of components through the last generation laser cladding technology, under which Co, Ni, Stainless steels, Cermets (WC, TiC and VC) are deposited to produce wear and shock resistant hard facing coatings and corrosion resistant cladding. Regarding babbitt bearings (50 mm to 1500 mm in diameter), TMCOMAS expertise focuses on manufacturing under drawing or sample and repair by centrifugal casting, soldering and thermal spraying. Regarding the activities of this project, TMCOMAS will offer to the project needs a full access to its facilities where thermal spray and laser cladding or welding is carried on.

Urban Air Purifier

URBAN AIR PURIFIER (UAP) is a Spanish company, located in Barcelona, specialist on air purification both indoor and outdoor. URBAN AIR PURIFIER is designing, developing, producing and selling air  filtration solutions and air purifiers devices for domestic uses (like offices, buildings, etc…), public uses (like malls, hospitals, hotels, shops, concert halls, sport clubs, gyms, restaurants, etc…) and has a division for especial projects in car parks, underground and schools. UAP has a R&D department able to develop and adapt the UAP technology to new challenges in new sectors and new areas with problems of the quality of the air. UAP has experience in NP due to the solutions implemented in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories where the quality of the air has to be equivalent to a clean room. UAP has experience in PGNP because the staff and R&D people have working before in industrial sector with HVOF and APS processes and in ceramic factories.

Unimat Prevención, S.L.

Unimat Prevencion, S.L. (UP) is a private Occupational Risk Prevention Service (in Spain) recognized by resolution of the Territorial Directorate of employment and work of the Generalitat Valenciana file number 6/97. We have our own legal personality and full capacity to act in accordance with the Royal Decree 688/2005. We are also duly registered in the SERPA computer application, developed and managed by the Spanish Ministry of Employment and Social Security, in accordance with the TIN orden 2504/2010.

We have wide experience of more than 30 years in different business sectors. Our work is focus on the implementation of an adequate occupational risk prevention policy within client companies with the main objective of reducing the accident rate. Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya

Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is a public university mainly specialised in the fields of architecture and engineering. UPC is currently leading most of the rankings in the Spanish higher education sector and holds an extensive management expertise in EU-funded research projects. Since 2007, UPC has been managing more than 170 project participations plus more than 47 project coordinations of projects pertaining to the 7th Framework Program and H2020 Program. The Department of Project and Construction Engineering (DPEC) is in charge of coursework within the programs of Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering, amongst others. The Department has a Doctoral Program in Construction Engineering. Furthermore, in relation to R&D activities, the department is externally recognised for its productivity and excellence within the research area

The UPC will participate in the project through the Group of Construction Research and Innovation (GRIC), of the DPEC. The main goal of this group is the development of innovative solutions in the construction field, throughout the life cycle of the construction project especially focusing on improving the energy efficiency of buildings during its operational phase. In addition, GRIC has a specific line to model the build environment, and more specifically the indoor air quality in buildings.

GRIC participated as a partner in projects different calls funded by public bodies such as FP6, H2020, ARTEMIS or Spanish ministry of science and innovation, and projects with privats fundings with companies such as HP, SANITAS or ESVAL Ingenieros

Other international activities of GRIC members are the participation in different international forums related to the improvement of construction processes such as the CIB- International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction. The group members are also involved in some standardisation activities, both in ISO/TC59 and in the correspondent national AENOR/CTN41.
